Working at the intersection of law and community organizing, PICC member Free Migration Project (FMP) envisions a world where free movement of people is the legal norm. FMP calls for recognition of a human right to migrate and the abolition of deportation. FMP believes the current immigration system in the U.S. is based on pillars of white supremacy, racism, and xenophobia. FMP continues to fight for liberation of families trapped at the Berks family prison and in sanctuary churches around the country. Along with Aldea - the People's Justice Center, FMP is litigating three separate cases in Pennsylvania courts in which detained children are challenging their ongoing imprisonment at the Berks family prison during the COVID-19 pandemic. FMP is also fighting for freedom for Carmela Apolonio Hernandez and her four children, currently living in a sanctuary church in Philadelphia.

The Welcoming Schools Campaign aims to educate and empower immigrant and refugee students and parents about how they can work with their schools to create welcoming, supportive, and protective policies and practices, regardless of immigration status. At the core of our campaign are the Welcoming Schools Campaign Toolkit and Welcoming Schools Report, which are advocacy resources to ensure that school districts are creating a safe and welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their immigration status. PICC also provides presentations and workshops for students and parents that cover four topic areas: Welcoming Schools Campaign, Immigrant & Refugee Rights in School, Access to College for Immigrant and Undocumented Students, and Deportation Defense (for affected community members).

New American voters are a growing political voice in PA. Over 125,000 people have naturalized in Pennsylvania since 2014, according to a report recently released by the PICC and National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA). Since 2008, PICC has led a non-partisan volunteer program to register these new citizens to vote at their naturalization ceremonies in Philadelphia.

In this critical election, we believe it is more important than ever that these new American voters are heard at the polls - and we need your help! PICC will be hosting virtual phone and text banking through November 3rd to educate new citizens about Pennsylvania’s new vote by mail option and give needed information about voting on Election Day. All of our phone and text banks are non-partisan, our goal is to give all new American voters the information they need to vote.

The Policy Director will be focused on helping PICC answer the question: how do we change the political landscape in Pennsylvania to win more pro-immigrant policies and stop all anti-immigrant policies?

The Policy Director will lead PICC’s advocacy, working to increase the political power of immigrant and refugee communities through increasing the visibility of immigrant and refugee communities and organizations in the state capitol, developing the political understanding of community-led organizations, and creating deeper relationships with policy makers and progressive allies. The Policy Director serves as a member of PICC’s leadership team and shapes strategic thinking for the organization, including fundraising, communications, and planning. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a flexible and team-oriented approach to problem solving, and be excited about building political power for immigrant communities in Pennsylvania.
