Welcoming Schools Campaign Speaking Request
***At this moment we are ONLY accepting requests for remote trainings.  We will NOT be providing in-person trainings until further notice.  Please email us if you have any questions!***

Do you want to learn more about how you and your school/organization can support immigrant and refugee communities?  Does your school/organization work with immigrant communities directly affected by recent policy changes?

Maybe we can help!  Please complete this form if you would like a presentation on our Welcoming Schools Campaign.

Please note that we will be unlikely to fill requests made less than 2 weeks before an event.  We can only accommodate requests in Pennsylvania.

We will present at the following events:
- in-classroom (students and/or parents)
- back to school nights, school events
- community parent meetings, PTO's, bilingual parent meetings
- youth meetings
- community meetings
- professional development trainings

All of our workshops are interactive and have been updated for remote learning.

Please choose from one or more of the following presentation topics to be covered:

- Welcoming Schools Campaign- This workshop goes over frequently asked questions regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the rights of students in schools. We also provide advocacy tools and what schools can do to support and create welcoming schools.

Time for workshop: 1:30- 2 hrs

- Immigrant & Refugee Rights in Schools- Using our Welcoming Schools reports we discuss the experiences of students and parents and how to use these tools for advocacy within their schools, district and elected officials. This training focuses on important areas of focus for educators identified by immigrant and refugee parents and students.

Time for workshop: 1-1:30 hrs

- Access to College for Immigrant and Undocumented Students- Undocumented, TPS, DED and DACA recipients may struggle navigating the higher education system due to their immigration status. This training provides students, parents and educators with appropriate information for these specific communities, how to find the right school, financial support, and self advocacy. This training touches on real life student experiences and provides resources that can be used in the search and navigation of higher education. We also cover ways to engage in the fight for passing in-state tuition rates and financial support bill for these communities.

Time for workshop: 1:00- 2 hrs

- Deportation Defense (for affected community members)- This workshop goes over the rights of undocumented immigrant communities at home, work, in the streets and public spaces in case they encounter immigration enforcement (ICE). We also provide resources and teach how to create a deportation defense plan, recording situations, finding a loved one detained by immigration and where to find help. The goal of this workshop is to educate communities and allies to defend themselves.

Time for workshop: 1:30-2 hrs

We will give priority to sessions for immigrant and refugee community members first.

- Do outreach and turn out appropriate community members (students, parents, educators depending on the workshop and who it's geared to) and make sure people register for event ahead of time. Share reminders with your members.
- Provide language and accessibility support or let PICC know about any language or accessibility needs like interpretation, translation, ASL,  Closed Captioning, etc at least 2 weeks before session so we have time to find support.

- Share resources with community members
- January- March 2021: Share our anonymous Welcoming Schools Questionnaire with immigrant students grades 5-12 and parents with children in K-12 to share their experiences and needs from the education system. This is an advocacy tool that our communities have used to identify what is helpful or areas of support within the schools across the state. Our organization will put together a report in May 2020 based on their responses. This material will be shared with your organization and community members for your own advocacy work and understanding of what students and parents need to feel welcomed in schools.
